Project Overview

Glenelg Town Hall is one of South Australia’s most cherished civic buildings and a much-loved local landmark. Designed by renowned Adelaide architect Edmund Wright, the foundation stone was laid in 1875, with the iconic clock tower and its distinctive dome added in 1884. For more than a century, the Town Hall has been central to Glenelg’s civic, cultural and community life.

To protect this important heritage building and ensure it remains in good condition for future generations, the City of Holdfast Bay has undertaken a series of carefully planned conservation and upgrade works. Major conservation works commenced in 2019, restoring key external features, including the clock tower, the southern façade, and parts of the eastern façade. These works addressed the impacts of ageing materials and moisture, restored the historic clock mechanism, repaired stonework and render, replaced roofing, and refreshed the building using finishes sympathetic to its heritage character.

As part of ongoing maintenance, render repairs will be carried out to sections of the Town Hall most exposed to coastal weather, including half of the eastern façade, the southern façade and 22m of the western facade, and selected internal areas of the clock tower. These works, beginning in May 2026, are a necessary and routine part of caring for a prominent historic building in a public setting and will help ensure Glenelg Town Hall remains safe and resilient for years to come.
