Project Overview

The key elements of the Coast and Transition zones of Jetty Road, Glenelg will include:

  • The installation of new traffic lights with pedestrian crossing on the intersection of Jetty Road/Moseley Street
  • Installation of new Juperana stone pavers on footpaths
  • Footpaths at road level from the Jetty Road junction with Sussex Street, into Moseley Street to Elizabeth Street and along Colley Terrace to Hope Street
  • Mountable kerbs west of Chapel Plaza
  • Disability Discrimination Act-compliant continuous footpaths on some side streets intersecting with Jetty Road to give pedestrians right of way.

Major construction works began in August 2025 and includes temporary restrictions to vehicle access to sections of Jetty Road.

The construction schedule has been accelerated to allow work in the roadway to be undertaken while the Glenelg tram line is temporarily suspended as part of the State Government’s Tram Grade Separation Project.

This also means that the expected completion date of the Transforming Jetty Road Glenelg project has been brought forward by almost 18 months, from the end of 2027 to the second half of 2026.

About the zones

The Transition zone extends west from the Partridge/Gordon streets intersection to Sussex Street and is where people transition from one zone to another. It is used by both local and visitors.

The Coast zone extends west from Sussex Street to the fringes of Moseley Square, into Moseley Street, into Colley Terrace to the junction with Hope Street. It is the entertainment and dining area, attracting high volumes of pedestrians.

Latest update

Key milestone reached in Jetty Road upgrade - 19 December 2025

Today’s the day a significant milestone in the Transforming Jetty Road project will be reached.

At 5pm, Jetty Road, east of Durham Street will reopen to all traffic, which includes the junction with Moseley Street and all side streets off Jetty Road, all the way up to Brighton Road.

Thanks to the accelerated construction schedule, which started in August 2025, footpaths in the western end of Jetty Road have been rebuilt and significantly widened, providing more space for pedestrians and outdoor dining while improving accessibility.

Over the past 137 days, there’s been:

  • 1726 tonnes of asphalt placed
  • 76,654 individual pavers laid, which is 20,356 more pavers than the 56,298 people who were at Adelaide Oval for the first day of the third Test
  • 1684 metres of concrete kerbing and edging constructed
  • 31 new uplights installed
  • 1204 new plants and trees planted in new garden beds
  • 20 new pieces of street furniture added
  • 146 metres of stormwater pipe installed
  • 27 new and upgraded stormwater pits, and 103 upgraded property stormwater outlets
  • An average of 83 workers on site per day throughout the week
  • 68,945 construction hours worked on site (up to 17 December 2025) with an average of 83 workers on site per day throughout the week

While the Colley Terrace corner remains closed to traffic for now, the large space will be used for outdoor dining, entertainment and more public space over the Christmas and New Year period starting on Friday evening, 19 December 2025.

The Colley Terrace corner will be paved in the new year and opened to traffic early next year.

The Transforming Jetty Road Glenelg project is due for completion in the second half of 2026, which is almost 18 months earlier than first anticipated.

See map below for the temporary road changes currently in place.

Temporary road closures and changes

Below is a summary of the temporary road changes in place during the construction works.

Jetty Road is open to all vehicles, except for the section of roadway west of Durham Street to Colley Terrace.

There is vehicle access to and from Jetty Road from Moseley Street. While the Colley Terrace corner remains closed, traffic from Moseley Street must turn right onto Jetty Road.

The left hand turn onto Jetty Road towards Colley Terrace will be reimplemented in early 2026.

Traffic light poles have been installed at the Jetty Road / Moseley Street intersection, but will not be operational until early 2026.

There is no vehicle access to Jetty Road from Colley Terrace.

A turnaround area has been implemented at Hope Street.

Local traffic is permitted access up to the corner of Moseley Square, which includes visitors to Colley Towers and delivery vehicles.

Pedestrians can still access Jetty Road and Moseley Square from Colley Terrace.

Colley Terrace is expected to reopen to vehicles in early 2026.

Durham Street remains one-way southbound between Augusta Street and Jetty Road and vehicles can exit onto Jetty Road via a left hand turn.

Additional information

Below is further information about the construction schedule and timings.

With Phase 1 scheduled for completion by late December 2025, the construction footprint will be significantly reduced over the Christmas and New Year period, with only small compounds remaining in isolated locations east of Sussex Street.

The roadway and all parking bays and tram stops on Jetty Road will be completed and reopened for public use.

Work will continue into the side streets, on the footpaths and garden beds, with the project expected to be completed by the second half of 2026.

Please find below our indicative construction schedule and expected completion dates for different phases of the Transforming Jetty Road Glenelg project.

Phase 1 - August 2025 to late December 2025

Works undertaken during this time include:

  • New underground stormwater pipes and a trench grate system on Colley Terrace to Hope Street and Jetty Road to Sussex Street
  • Upgraded stormwater systems and common services trenches from Hope Street to Gordon / Partridge Street
  • The roadway, tram stops and parking bays between Moseley Square and Gordon / Partridge streets intersection
  • The paved footpaths and garden beds between Moseley Square and Sussex Street
  • Traffic lights infrastructure installed for the pedestrian crossing at the Jetty Road / Moseley Street intersection
  • The Gordon / Partridge streets intersection road works subject to Service Authority that needs to be undertaken to complete this work
  • New tram stop material treatments to better integrate the stops into the footpaths

At 5pm on 19 December 2025, Jetty Road opened to all traffic, east of Durham Street.

-------

Phase 2 - September 2025 to March 2026

Works undertaken during this time include:

  • Colley Terrace and the interface with Moseley Square (the plaza area)
  • Outstanding footpath work and garden beds along Jetty Road between Nile Street and Gordon / Partridge streets intersection

At the completion of this work, Colley Terrace is expected to reopen to vehicles in early 2026

------

Phase 3 - January 2026 to August 2026

Works undertaken during this time include:

  • Side street interfaces with Jetty Road
  • Any outstanding works along Jetty Road

Pedestrian access will be maintained along the entire street during each phase of construction, via temporary walkways or ramps as needed.

We are limiting nighttime and weekend construction works for several reasons:

  • To offer traders, who operate during the day and night, a reprieve from the noise and large construction footprint and accelerated program of works
  • A reprieve from the noise and construction works also applies to residents who live within or nearby the Jetty Road precinct
  • To construct at night incurs significant and additional costs. As the budget for the Transforming Jetty Road Glenelg project is fixed, nighttime construction works would significantly impact on that budget, thereby reducing the amount or quality of infrastructure delivered through the Transforming Jetty Road Glenelg project.

Some low-impact work is done on Saturday mornings however the rest of the weekend remains construction free.

There will be temporary re-routing of some bus services from Colley Terrace to Anzac Highway with stops near Wigley Reserve.
