Glenelg Oval, located in Glenelg East, is an established sport and community recreation reserve which is highly valued by existing user groups and the local community.

Glenelg Oval is a high profile cricket and football venue used primarily by the Glenelg District Cricket Club and the Glenelg Football Club who participate in the SANFL. The site is considered a regional sporting facility in Council’s Open Space and Public Realm Strategy due to the level of play, current facility provision and broad participation catchment. The site is also occupied by the Holdfast Tennis club and Glenelg Primary School, who have access to the playing field for interschool sports and other activities.

The site is of local heritage value and contains some historic and significant infrastructure dating back to the early 1900's. The Air Raid Shelter was constructed in approximately 1942 during the Second World War, and is considered a significant heritage place within the City of Glenelg.

The Master Plan aims to identify key issues and challenges containing the use and development of Glenelg Oval and provide a clear vision and direction for the site that will enable Council to plan for it's future enhancement and improvement. Activating use, providing an inviting and welcoming place to visit, and developing centralised hub for sport and the community are key outcomes for the Master Plan.

A staged approach for the development and implementation of key Master Plan actions will be taken. This approach will provide the opportunity to allocate funding across a number of financial years, in line with the proposed sequence of works and investigate relevant external funding applications to support recommendations.

Proposed actions have been allocated a level of priority within each of the three stages of development, and are based on their relative impact on delivering the desired outcomes. It should be acknowledged that priorities can change and are based on funding availability. The presentation of new or unknown opportunities or changes in community demands can also alter priorities.

    Due to the scope and funding required for the implementation of the entire Glenelg Oval Master Plan, the plan has been reviewed and segmented into stages. There are several dependencies within the staging plan that require completion prior to the subsequent stages commencing. The proposed change rooms are highlighted as Stage 2 of the Glenelg Oval Master Plan which identifies the need to develop inclusive unisex change room facilities primarily for Glenelg Football Club and the Glenelg District Cricket Club.

    In consultation with Glenelg Football Club (GFC) and Glenelg District Cricket Club (GDCC), Cricket Australia and SANFL, Council is undertaking the development of two new unisex, multi-sporting code compliant change rooms with umpires amenities which are to be constructed on the south west corner of the Glenelg Oval precinct.

    Stage 2 of the Master Plan was successful in receiving funding from Federal, State and Local Governments resulting in a total budget of $987,000.

    The breakdown of project funding contributions are:

    • Federal Government $300,000 (Community Development Grants Program)
    • State Government $487,000 (Grassroots Football, Cricket and Netball Facility Program - Round 3)
    • City of Holdfast Bay $200,000

    The Holdfast Tennis Club redevelopment is well underway, with the old clubroom being demolished and preparation for footings to be poured the week of 13 July 2020.

    The project is on track and due for completion in October 2020.

    It was an important moment for the City of Holdfast Bay and the Holdfast Tennis Club as we saw the demolition of the old clubhouse take place on 30 June. The original clubhouse was built in 1937 for only £200 and it no longer met modern day standards, particularly for the growing club. This moment has been long awaited for by council, the club and the community. The project is full steam ahead with construction on the new clubhouse commencing shortly on 6 July.

    The City of Holdfast Bay and Holdfast Tennis Club have been working closely throughout the project to achieve best practice by ensuring modern day standards are met for club members and the broader community. Holdfast Bay is committed to improving community well-being through investment in enhancing sporting infrastructure such as the Holdfast Tennis Club.

    Today we celebrated commencement of the Stage 1A Holdfast Tennis Clubs redevelopment – works that have been many years in the making. The first sod was turned for this major redevelopment that will create a new clubroom that will add to the unique streetscape of Williams Ave, Glenelg East. The $1.2 million project made possible through the support of the City of Holdfast Bay and Tennis SA.

    It was great to have the Elected Members Cr. Rosalina (Mikki) Bouchee, Cr. Bob Patton and Cr. William Miller, along with representatives from Holdfast Tennis Club, Cook Building and council administration on site to celebrate this exciting occasion.

    The City of Holdfast Bay is committed to enhancing the quality of life for residents and increasing community well-being through investment in enhancing existing amenities. We work closely with local sporting clubs to increase participation and support continued growth and sustainability.

    In 2017, following Community and Sporting Club Engagement, Council endorsed the Glenelg Oval Master Plan. The plan identifies the key issues and challenges of the site and provides direction and staging options for the development of the Oval precinct. The plan provides a clear vision and direction for the site that enables Council to plan for its future enhancement and improvement.

    Key Stakeholders of the Glenelg Oval Precinct include, Glenelg District Cricket Club, Glenelg Football Club and Glenelg Primary School. The Holdfast Tennis Club is part of the Glenelg Oval Precinct. This redevelopment is Stage 1A of the precinct master plan.

    A staged approached for the development and implementation was identified, with Stage 1A being redevelopment of the Holdfast Tennis Club on the Eastern side of the precinct. Scope of works include:

    • Construction of new tennis clubrooms
    • Redevelopment and realignment of all existing tennis courts (including the two community courts)
    • Improved lighting of the courts and fencing/gates
    • Upgrade of on-street parking along Williams Avenue (providing indented parking on western curb line to improve access into/out of residential properties) Stage 1B
    • Landscaping

    The City of Holdfast Bay has committed $1,253,349 for the project. With a $15,000 grant from Tennis SA. The redeveloped Holdfast Tennis Club will provide a high-quality sport and recreation facility for the community. The new clubroom and improved courts will increase participation and foster participation across all ages. The new building, leased by the tenant club, will be a community facility available for hire.

    Timeline

    Construction will start in June 2020, with the construction of the new clubrooms, upgrade to the eight courts and new lighting and fencing. It is anticipated the redevelopment of Stage 1A - Holdfast Tennis Club will be completed in November 2020 (26 week work schedule).
